WIG ConsTRUCTION 101
e-learning • INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN & Development • Multimedia asset development • PRoject management • SOCIAL MEDIA GRAPHICs
OVERVIEW
Across 6 months in collaboration with the client/SME, I developed a robust 5-Module self-paced, asynchronous e-course that equips aspiring wig makers with the ability to create a custom wig from start to finish on their own. By cleverly leveraging hybrid instructional design approaches and by adhering to the e-learning principles that optimize online skill acquisition, we constructed a complete and cumulative learning experience for our e-learners.
As an Instructional Design Specialist, my primary goal was to provide our learners with a digital learning experience that accomplished specific learning objectives across topics such as Wig Construction Theory, Sewing Machine Setup, Wig Caps, and Wig Construction. I accomplished this through:
Thinkific eLMS Modular Course Development
Multimedia asset developments such as how-to instructional videos, micro-lectures with motion graphics, and interactive learning elements
Formative and summative evaluation Tools (Knowledge Checks and Demonstration Assignments Submissions)

A combination of the systematic-Dick-and-Carey-A.D.D.I.E. and agile-SAM instructional design models was leveraged to design the scope and asset development for this project.
Phase 1: ANALYSIS
Learner Analysis, Context Analysis, Performance Context Analysis
From March - May 2021, I held discovery meetings with my client/SME. In those meetings, through a series of strategically posed questions, I was able to learn her holistic vision for the project and analyze her learner group. The following captures what she shared as her personal goal for this course:
“I wanted a course that helped aspiring wig makers navigate the ins and outs of wig making and avoid simple mistakes that I made along my personal wig making journey. My goal was to create a learning space that was not only informative, but was broken down in a way that made learning fun and easy. My Hope is that they will leave this course feeling empowered to create their own lane, build on their financial goals, and experience the financial freedom that this craft so uniquely brings.”
- Mwannasheria Edwards, Founder, Modern Beauty Co.
From here, I learned what was necessary for the course atlas document (SME Workbook) I generated for us to use as framework during the following design and development phases.
PHase 2: instructional DESIGN & development
thinkific LMS / storyboarding / script and course writing / instructional design
Holistic terminal and performance learning objectives were generated in order to guide our instruction towards what we ultimately want the learners to be able to do by the end of the instruction, namely to create a custom wig from start to finish on their own.
To support their acquisition of that terminal objective, performance objectives and their corresponding subordinate goals were also generated across topics such as Wig Construction Theory, Sewing Machine Setup, Wig Caps, and Wig Construction.
For example, one learner performance goal in the Wig Construction Theory module was for learners to be able to recognize the three 3 standard head sizes. A subordinate goal for that performance goal was: At the end of the instruction learners will recognize the 3 standard head sizes: small (21” circumference), medium (22” circumference), and large (23” circumference).
Next, to optimize time and resources, I generated a Production Shot List to serve as a checklist on the day of the video shoot. Leveraging this list, we were able to film with confidence — knowing that each recorded element directly instructs learners according to our pre-determined performance learning objectives and their subordinate goals.
MULTIMEDIA ASSET DEVELOPMENT
To promote learner-engagement and holistic course-automaticity, I leveraged expertise from my SME to develop the following multimedia assets in correspondence to performance and terminal learning objectives:
Module Learning Objectives
Scriptwriting with Engaging, Conversational Language
Interactive Learning Elements
1.5 hours of Micro-Lecture Explainer Video Content
Motion Graphics
Course Graphics (Banners, Infographics, etc.)
Knowledge Checks (with immediate feedback)
Demonstration Assignments
PHase 3: Social media promotion and course Launch
social media graphics / asset implementation, launch, and evaluation
After a 2-week social media promotional campaign, Wig Construction 101 was successfully launched in August 2021.
